Market regime filter (SPY & QQQ)
Before buying individual stocks, check SPY and QQQ against their 8, 21, and 50-day averages. When they're below, stand down or only trade the indexes. When the 21 sits close above the 50, don't buy pullbacks.
Status: testing. This came out of the October 14 session and is being tracked before it gets promoted to a standing rule. Full write-up.
The idea
Most stocks follow the market. Pullbacks and breakouts in individual names work far better when the broad market is healthy. So the first question each day isn't "what should I buy?" but "is this a market I should be buying in at all?"
The check
Look at SPY and QQQ against their daily 8 EMA, 21 EMA, and 50 SMA:
- Above all three, prior day closed above the 8: green light. Trade breakouts and pullbacks in strong names, or trade the index itself.
- Below the 8 and the 21: stand down on new individual-stock risk. Watch which names hold up, since they're the leaders for when the market turns.
- The 21–50 cushion: if the 21 EMA sits only slightly above the 50 SMA, a sharp drop can push the 21 below the 50, and recoveries from that are less clean. Don't buy pullbacks when the cushion is thin. When there's a healthy gap, a pullback to the 38.2% or 50% retracement can be bought, preferably in the index itself, with options to define risk.
Open questions
- How thin is "thin"? It needs a number before this becomes an active rule.
- Does it actually improve results? Trades taken against the filter should show it in the record.

- Narrowing it down: a regime filter built on SPY and QQQAfter a hot CPI print pushed QQQ below its 21 EMA, I worked out a simple frame for when to take risk at all, and when to buy pullbacks.
- Risk came off: reading a broad risk-off daySeveral trailing positions stopped out on the same day. What the cross-asset picture said about why, and what it would take to get constructive again.

- Breakout from a baseA leading stock clears the top of a multi-week base on rising volume. Buy the break, stop under the breakout day, add only on a new base.
- Moving averages: the 8, 21, 50, and 200-weekA moving average smooths price into a trend line. Four of them do most of the work in this record: the daily 8 EMA, 21 EMA, 50 SMA, and the 200-week VWMA.
- One system until it's consistentEvery system has drawdowns. Hopping to a new one each time the current one hurts guarantees you never learn any of them. Get one consistent first, then build.
- Pullback in an uptrendA strong stock dips back to its rising 8 EMA and holds. Buy the hold, stop under the day's low, trim into the next push.
